Suppose, just suppose, one day we -- I mean everyone in the whole world -- decided to take off all our clothes and all our skin and all our hair. The ‘Let’s Talk About Race’ series of videos, led by the NHS England and NHS Improvement Midlands Equality, Diversity and Inclusion team, feature stories and lived experiences from colleagues throughout the NHS. I really appreciated how Julius Lester explained that people seemt to have a tendency to feel superiorer based on accomplishments, class, what they own, etc. Just as I am a story and you are a story and countries tell stories about themselves, race is a story, too. Written by two specialists in race relations and parents of two adopted African American sons, the book provides unique insights and practical guidance richly illustrated with personal examples, anecdotes, and prompts for personal reflection and conversations about race.

This one can simplify the subject and help people ease into what might otherwise be a difficult topic. In a time when we are seeing an increased interest in ancestry with individuals finding out about their heritage with home DNA testing, it is likely that conversations about race, cultural identity and background will become even more popular and interesting. This book taught about how we all look the same under our skin, so we should not be judging another person till we actually get to know them.

Inspired by this initiative, three Wolfson students, Annoa, Raquel and Megan, created a podcast, Shade in Cambridge. What a great way to talk about race, or any aspect of a person that makes them feel better than someone else. transporting readers away from a mundane viewpoint and allowing them to appreciate a common spiritual identity. This book will help public and school librarians face their own biases, showing them how to have honest discussions with children, their caregivers, and storytime attendees, as well as their colleagues. A veteran of the Civil Rights Movement, his photographs of that movement are included in an exhibition at the Smithsonian Institution and are part of the permanent photographic collection at Howard University. The course will further support learners to consciously and proactively address racial bias in their organisation.

What childhood experiences did you have with friends or adults who were different from you in some way? Bratt’s personal experiences and recent events that inspired the Black Lives Matter movement provide a backdrop. Author/narrator Julius Lester addresses his readers and explores the concept of racism and how people view and treat each other. Let’s Talk Race is for all white people who want to face the challenges of talking about race and working towards justice and equity. His most recent books are John Henry, And All Our Wounds Forgiven, a novel about the civil rights movement, and Othello, a novel based on the Shakespeare play.
